Key Finding
High frequencies of Pfdhps mutations (67.60% for A581G and 45.07% for A437G) indicate substantial sulfadoxine resistance in malaria parasites in western Cameroon.
This study from Cameroon examined malaria parasites rather than acupuncture or traditional Chinese medicine. Researchers investigated genetic mutations in malaria parasites that make them resistant to sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), an antimalarial drug commonly used to prevent malaria in pregnant women. The study collected blood samples from 286 patients at two hospitals in western Cameroon, finding that about 30% tested positive for malaria. Scientists analyzed the parasite DNA to look for specific genetic changes that indicate drug resistance. They found very high rates of mutations: 67.60% of parasites carried one resistance mutation (A581G) and 45.07% carried another (A437G). These high mutation frequencies suggest that the malaria parasites in this region have developed substantial resistance to sulfadoxine, one component of the SP drug combination. The study also found that education level was linked to malaria infection rates, with people having only primary education showing the highest infection rates (41.66%). While this research provides important information about malaria drug resistance in Cameroon, it does not relate to acupuncture treatment or traditional Chinese medicine practices. This study is not relevant to patients considering acupuncture for any health condition. If you are interested in acupuncture treatment, consult with a qualified, licensed acupuncturist in your area.
This molecular epidemiology study examined Plasmodium falciparum dihydropteroate synthase (Pfdhps) gene mutations associated with sulfadoxine resistance in western Cameroon. Of 286 patients sampled, 87 (30.41%) tested positive for P. falciparum. DNA was extracted using Chelex 100 method, followed by semi-nested PCR and RFLP analysis. The A581G mutant allele frequency was 67.60%, while A437G frequency was 45.07%. Wild-type allele frequencies were 48.87% (A437G) and 22.53% (A581G). Mean parasite density was similar between sexes (males: 2343±1240 parasites/μL; females: 2283±1483 parasites/μL). Education level showed significant association with positivity (p=0.001). The high prevalence of Pfdhps mutations indicates substantial sulfadoxine resistance pressure in this population. However, without corresponding dhfr mutation data for pyrimethamine resistance, complete SP efficacy assessment remains incomplete. This study has no relevance to acupuncture or traditional Chinese medicine practice.
