Find acupuncture covered by Medicare

Medicare covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain — but only through specific provider types. Find a Medicare-eligible provider near you.

What Medicare covers

📋

Up to 20 sessions per year

Medicare Part B covers up to 12 acupuncture sessions in 90 days for chronic low back pain. An additional 8 sessions are covered if you show improvement — 20 total annually.

🎯

Chronic low back pain only

Coverage is limited to chronic low back pain lasting 12 weeks or longer, with no specific underlying condition identified. Acupuncture for other conditions is not covered by original Medicare.

👨‍⚕️

Provider requirements

Must be performed by — or supervised by — a physician (MD/DO), nurse practitioner (NP), or physician assistant (PA) with documented acupuncture training. Licensed acupuncturists (L.Ac.) alone are NOT covered by original Medicare.

🚫

Licensed acupuncturists not covered

Under original Medicare, licensed acupuncturists (L.Ac., DAOM) cannot bill Medicare directly for acupuncture services. They may work in a qualified provider's practice but cannot be the billing provider.

Medicare Advantage may be different

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans set their own coverage rules. Many Advantage plans cover acupuncture more broadly — including licensed acupuncturists. Check your specific plan's benefits.
